Created in the 1970s just as China was beginning its ascent as a global economic force, this painted panel based on a mythological tale seems to foretell the nation’s strength and power. Pictured in what is described as a “yellow mountain atmosphere," a pair of ferocious lions pursue a hare in a vividly animated scene. The cycle of life plays out with respective symbols, the hare symbolizing peace and longevity and the lions sovereignty and power. We love the way the high-keyed colors and bright red frame invests these beasts with magnificent vitality.
