The ideas for Gordon Chandler’s provocative sculptures evolve from immediate and local influences that often seem random and accidental. No wonder then that rusted and misshapen scraps of discarded metal star in many of his works. “Crossword” is composed of lettered squares punctuated by rusted out nail holes. Interrupted by solid black shapes, the work grids the squares, in soft, muted tones that take on the look of fine marble tiles, to look like a worked crossword puzzle. One is tempted to make out words, but the faint to ghostly letters are seemingly randomly arranged o resist interpretation, causing the viewer to embrace the serene assemblage as a whole. Each piece contains a unique serial number specific to the piece.
