Thangkas are devotional paintings displayed by Buddhists in their homes, monasteries, and temples. Rich pigments are still incredibly vibrant in this sacred 19th-century Tibetan Thangka. The painting's central figure is of Vajrayogini, a female Buddha of Tantric Buddhism. Typically depicted with red skin and a third eye of wisdom, she is the Buddha of transcendent passion and is devoted to the well-being of others and the destruction of ego. In this Thangka, Vajrayogini is shown with a curved driguk knife in one hand and a kapala of blood in the other ( a vessel made of a human skull). Above this deity is a seated Buddha and a Bodhisattva figure. This Thangka is framed appropriately & thoughtfully by silk fabric panels bearing auspicious Buddhist symbols.
