Usually mounted to swing from trees so that both sides could be seen, barbershop signs are fascinating examples of pop and folk art in Africa. Each sign was unique and painted to express the individual personality of the barber, his hairdressing options, and the popular icons he emulated. While many such signs featured popular celebrities of the day, this sign communicates a different strategy. It was painted to highlight the hairstyles of the growing Ghanaian professional middle class of the late-20th century. Both sides are painted with a variety of hairstyles and expressive portraits.

“I am particularly fond of PAGODA RED as we have known the family for so long. Betsy is a professional in every way and her intelligent taste comes from a long line of family knowledge in the arts. She and her team are the very best to work with and we find treasures with every visit!”
