This handsome, elm wood chest was made over a century ago in Shanxi Province: the region where China’s first bank was started centuries earlier. It is possible that this chest has such weight and presence because bankers once used it as a money storage chest. The square and oval pattern reflect an important and popular business philosophy of people in ancient China, “flexible within principle.” The square represents principle, and the oval, flexibility.
