Used as a storage chest for clothes and personal belongings, this 19th-century coffer was likely commissioned for a wedding dowry, bestowed upon a groom filled with silks and gifts. The square-corner cabinet features four small doors that open to a large interior fitted with a single shelf. The exterior is finished with layer upon layer of brilliant cinnabar-red lacquer, now heavily worn from over a century of use. Traces of the original gilt decoration remain, adorning the front with mythical creatures, offering fruits, and floral arrangements emblematic of the seasons.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
