This 19th-century coffer beautifully represents the household storage cabinets made in Tianjin, a port city in Northern China. Typical of much Qing-dynasty furniture, the sideboard is perfectly balanced, its clean lines perfected accented by the original brass hardware. The chest's lacquer finish has developed wonderful character over time, showing years of use by the family who very well may have received it as part of a woman's dowry.
