A slide of the dagger post and a pull on the fish-shaped handles reveals three shelves, two drawers, and one hidden compartment, once used to shelter the prized belongings of a Qing-dynasty scholar. Evincing the austere attitude of Ming-dynasty aesthetics, this 19th-century cabinet is minimally accented with rounded molding, a subtly carved apron, and layers of lacquer that reveal themselves in a rich, deep brown.
