This early 20th century bookcase once stood in a Qing-dynasty scholars' studio, piled high with books and painted scrolls. Considered a status symbol, books were given pride of place on impressive shelves such as this, alongside precious objects and works of art.

Constructed with clean lines and open sides, this tall bookcase has a minimalist design, decorated only by beaded edges, oblong cutouts, and humpback stretchers at the base. Darkened to a black-brown finish, the timeless shelf has modern appeal and holds its own in a contemporary office or living room.
