This pair of cabinets is over a century old, and in remarkable condition. Each cabinet has a mitered mortise and tenon frame with floating panels. The lacquered elm wood has a rich luster with beautifully detailed gilt paintings. The artisan’s masterful work gives us a clue that the cabinets may have been used to hold a scholars' objects, vases, and books shown in the paintings.
