This pair of low 19th century Chinese chests features finely rendered paintings of flowers and birds amidst a garden landscape over a rich hand-applied black lacquer finish. It is likely the chests would have originally been used to store clothing, incense or other personal items in a woman's sleeping quarters. They are connected to low platforms whose aprons are painted with dragons, representing strength and pearls for wisdom that protected the cabinets and their contents from moisture.
