Japanese Tachi-dōrō Stone Lantern

This Japanese stone lantern (ishi-dōrō) is a lovely example of a pedestal lantern (tachi-dōrō), used in the traditional Japanese garden to contrast lush foliage and cast light on its surroundings. The specific design of this lantern recreates the stone pedestal lanterns seen throughout the Kasuga shrine in Nara. The lantern's cylindrical column rests on a lotus pedestal base and supports a pagoda-form lamp housing carved with six sides, a scrolled roof, and a lotus-wrapped jewel finial. Originally used only at Buddhist temples, the lit stone lantern represents the light that overcomes the darkness of ignorance. Whether shining light on a walking path or tucked deep into the garden, this sculptural lantern brings balance and serenity to any space.
