These mid-19th century Chinese Fu dog protectors, each carved by hand from a single block of limestone, once guarded the entrance to a provincial Chinese residence. They feature mirror depictions of relaxed, reclining lion dogs with flowing manes and open friendly mouths. They sit atop fabric-draped pedestals supported by the Taoist gods of Heaven, Earth and Water. Dark areas on the lions' heads reveal places where they have been frequently touched.
