China first began working with cast iron thousands of years ago during the illustrious Zhou dynasty. Continuing a long tradition of metalwork, this more recent 19th-century jar was originally used by a Chinese doctor to store medicinal herbs used to restore balance to a patient's energies. The apothecary jar exhibits a textured surface created by the sand mold used to shape the vessel with a delicate lotus design, a motif symbolizing purity and perfection. With a beautifully aged finish and rustic character, this jar is perfect as a decorative planter or home accent.
