Elegantly simple in design, this pair of carriage benches from China's Zhejiang province celebrates the beauty of clean lines. Made of northern elmwood, each bench was constructed with mortise-and-tenon joinery techniques - an age-old method of carpentry without the use of nails or screws. A straight stretcher links each pair of splayed legs, accented by a simply formed spandrel. Still cloaked in the original lacquer finish, these narrow benches are the perfect way to bring a touch of history into the modern home.
