Beautifully carved qilin—mythical creatures symbolizing virtue and perfection—appear among the delicate vines on the back splats of these folding chairs. Pairs of similarly designed chairs are featured in Beijing's palace museum. This form is considered by many to be one of the most elegant of all chairs, combining utility with grandeur. The chairs are carved of feathery-grained chicken wing wood, jichimu, prized and beloved by Chinese furniture makers, and now extremely rare.
