These distinctive 19th-century tall back chairs were constructed with "coat-hanger” crest rails that reflect traditional Chinese furniture designs perfected over many centuries. The dramatic upward turn of the top rail and protruding armrests indicate that these chairs were likely commissioned by a high ranking official. The back splats are decorated with carved medallions of bats and a lone stag, both symbols of longevity. In the context of an official's armchair, this deer motif can also be interpreted as a wish for a promotion to a raised offficial rank.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
