Unusual for the small scale, this pair of 19th-century tall back chairs are diminutive updates on the classic yoke-back armchair popular since the Song dynasty. Also referred to as official’s hat chairs, the chair mimics the brimmed hats of government workers in the curved head rail. Once reserved for royalty, these chairs became status symbols for the elite, paired together in a prominent room to show off the owner’s rank and importance. More streamlined than earlier versions, this pint-sized pair relaxes the classic flared head rail, dynamic curved arms, and stretcher-enforced sturdy base with clean lines and a more approachable scale. Pair them up on an enclosed porch as a surprising alternative to the Adirondack chair.
Seat height 12 1/2"
