Crafted in northern China in the mid-19th century, this feng deng, or "square stool," honors classical Chinese style with simple lines and natural beauty. Much more portable than heavier chairs, stools such as this were pulled up for use at mealtimes or used in an outside courtyard or garden. Designed with rounded legs and stretchers, the stool references a style of simple bent bamboo construction popular in earlier eras. Coated in a layer of dark red lacquer, the feng deng adds color and texture to interiors as a low stool or side table.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
