Wonderfully versatile, stools were used by emperors as well as rural villagers. They were placed in all rooms in a household, but also used by street merchants as they plied their goods and services. This wonderful three legged stool, is likely provincial based on the character of the boldly formed and beautifully aged round elm seat. The simple braces join in the center exemplifying the sophistication of mortise and tenon construction, traditional in Chinese furniture.
