Low Tibetan Peony Table

This extraordinary low Tibetan table dates to the mid-19th century and is lavishly decorated from end to end with tree peonies and offering fruits. The square table has a waisted design with corner legs and eight side panels, four of which have been modified into functional drawers with simple brass pulls. Hand-painted in a dusky palette of gold, green and creme atop dark red lacquer, the allover design of peony blossoms and other flowers is typical in Tibetan art and symbolizes love, compassion and beauty in abundance. Peonies are also known as emblems of springtime, welcoming signs of warmth and renewal.

The leaf and fruit clusters tucked amidst the florals are depict the pomegranate, peach and citron, a motif known as the 'three fruits of blessings,' symbolizing happiness, longevity and wealth. Small round medallions accent the corners, brushed with Shou characters (壽) for longevity. The exuberant finish has aged beautifully with time, enriched by a worn texture and smooth patina that calls to be touched.
