This simple, rectangular tray is raised by four legs and was likely used as a part of the Ethiopian ritual of serving coffee to visitors or family. After cleansing the area with incense, coffee beans are roasted, hand-ground, and brewed, with special care taken to disperse the aromatics. The prepared coffee if then poured from a high height into cups set on a raised table such as this one. Reminiscent of African animal-form stools, this animated tray is carved with clean lines and a minimal form.
