During the 18th century, Europeans provided an eager market for Chinese export porcelain, especially the colorful and fanciful ware known as “famille rose.” Named for a palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favored roses and pinks, famille rose porcelain ware was crafted with the same technical virtuosity as imperial porcelain but designed for Western tastes.

This porcelain garden stool continues the famille rose tradition with a colorful display of peach tree branches laden with ripe fruit and pink blossoms. Depicted here with beautiful gradations of red to white, peaches are potent symbols of immortality and emblems of a long and happy marriage. Keeping with the classic studded barrel drum form, the stool features cutouts on the sides in the shape of interlocking coins, symbols of prosperity used to attract wealth. These central motifs are bordered by rings of auspicious ruyi, bands of decorative patterns, and scenes of bats flying amid clouds, symbols of happiness. A fantastic way to add pattern and color to an interior, this drum stool is a versatile seat or side table, indoors and out.

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
