This pair of early 20th-century elmwood low chests from northern China are fitted with simple diamond lattice doors and curled hoof feet. Creating traditional lattice was like assembling a puzzle. Unlike creating fretwork, done by carving or perforating a solid panel, lattice requires linking short pieces of wood to longer ones using mortise-and-tenon joinery to make geometric grids. The labor-intensive process results in beautiful handiwork, lending a lightness to the cabinets and allowing for airflow.
