This 19th-century stool from China's Shanxi province charms with its top-heavy form and fantastic texture. As evidenced by the many blade marks on its round top, this robust stool was originally used as a chopping block for cabbages. Cabbages were a widespread food staple throughout northern China. After the autumn harvest, cabbages would be hung outdoors in front of the home to be preserved through the winter. The sight of bountiful cabbages consequently became a shared source of comfort and cultural pride. With its unusual form and beautifully worn finish, this three legged stool is the perfect rustic accent to a modern kitchen or living room.
