The configuration of this 19th century coffer is typical of low cabinets from Tianjin, a port city in Northern China. Cabinets like this one provided general household storage. It has a strong presence, and maintains its original hand made brass hardware which, from that region, was often designed in square shapes, with back plates behind drawer pulls. This original red lacquer finish has developed wonderful character over the last century.
