Pair of Japanese Tansu Side Tables

Designed to be versatile and portable, Japanese tansu chests were multipurpose storage cabinets that moved throughout the home as needed. This pair of low cabinets are two halves of a traditional stacking wedding dowry tansu used for storing clothes and bedding. Known as kannon-biraki tansu, the stacking chest dates to the late 19th century and boasts a beautifully dark patina that only time can achieve.

Distinctive iron hardware patterns the front of the upper chest, with five hinges flanking either end and bands of iron encircling a central foliate lock plate. The lower chest has two wide drawers with simple lock plates, and the doors of the upper chest open to reveal four additional interior drawers. The chests have been elevated by simple steel mounts for use as side tables or nightstands.
