More portable than heavy chairs, stools have been a favored form of seating in Chinese culture for centuries and were used indoors and out at mealtimes and during social gatherings. This type of square stool is known as a fang deng, and doubles as a low table for displaying objects or serving tea.

The stools are crafted in a classical style, featuring waisted aprons, straight legs ending in hoofed feet, and thin humpback stretchers. Expertly constructed of northern elm (yumu) with mortise-and-tenon joinery, the pair combines functionality and spare elegance. Left undecorated, the stools have striking silhouettes enhanced by a richly worn dark brown finish.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
