After a period of excess under the shogun, traditional aesthetics of the tea ceremony returned to the classic roots of simplicity and tranquility during the Meiji period. This darkly lacquered tray exemplifies the refined style of tea ceremony objects. The tray is raised by a trestle base comprised of rounded corner legs and flat floor stretchers. An additional stretcher bisects the legs, designed to resemble a length of thin bamboo wrapped around the tray. The rectangular top is rather simple, framed by a beveled rim and decorated only by the tray's carved apron and dark lacquer finish. A time-honored way to serve tea, the tray also serves as a platform for displaying prized objects.
