This early 20th century three-drawer table began its life as a petite writing desk, produced for an export market that catered to Western tastes. An unusual design element for Chinese tables, the splayed legs of this console are reminiscent of the tapered A-frame of large Chinese noodle cabinets. The legs are stabilized by a latticework stretcher, an adaptation of Western forms that doubles as a low shelf. The table was then finished in a vibrant cinnabar red lacquer, a time-consuming process that requires thirty or more coats. We love how the beautifully aged red calls out the table’s clean lines.
