This finely crafted table from China’s Shanxi province was carved over two hundred years ago. The excellent proportions, concealed joinery, original hand forged hardware, and hoofed legs all have an austere beauty that belie the excellent craftsmanship. Though it is configured beautifully as a desk, likely it was originally used as an ancestral shrine in a provincial Confucian household. Among other things, incense, candles, and fruits would have been placed on it as offerings to ancestors. The original finish has aged beautifully over time.
