Designed to hold glowing embers, hibachi vessels were used as a source of heat or for cooking in Japanese homes. Ceramic hibachi were introduced during the Meiji period as an alternative to larger copper-lined wood hibachi and heavy bronze receptacles. Placed under a low wood kotatsu table with an open slat top, the hibachi functioned as a grill, and covered with a quilt across the slat top it created a cozy gathering place for the family. This hibachi dating from 1900 is decorated in the time-honored blue-and-white style with images of honorary objects. Grand in scale and heft, the hibachi makes an ideal jardinière.
