Popular throughout the Qing dynasty, display pedestals such as this were used to display precious objects, serve tea, or elevate burning incense. This square example dates to the mid-19th century and features a lower shelf enclosed on all sides by decorative quadrilobe cutouts. The table has a basic frame with straight corner legs, simple spandrels, and a single shallow drawer, perfect for stowing odds and ends. A black lacquer finish cloaks the exterior, beautifully aged with gentle wear and a rich patina. With its clean lined form and charming design, this square table blends easily into modern interiors as a side table or nightstand.
