This provincial lattice cabinet from the early 20th century was once used in a rural Chinese kitchen to store dishware, baskets and other kitchen supplies. Crafted with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, the tall cabinet has a lightweight design with plenty of storage, including an upper compartment with two interior shelves, three drawers and two slatted lower shelves. A sheer layer of red-brown lacquer darkens the exterior, now richly aged with time and speckled with imperfections. The cabinet is faced with latticework panels and decorative carvings laden with symbolism. Two inset carved panels decorate the upper doors, finished with black lacquer and mica flakes for added shimmer. The upper carvings depict a spray of seasonal flowers, while the lower depict perforated shou medallions flanked by four bats, symbols of longevity and blessings. The drawers are carved with simple fan motifs and the lower shelves are fronted with sliding lattice doors and enclosed by wooden slats. Today, this charming kitchen cabinet adds wonderful color and pattern to modern interiors as a linen press, cupboard or bookcase.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
