Shanxi Marble Drum

This minimalist drum stool was carefully carved from a single block of marble by artisans in China's Shanxi province. Drum-form stools such as this were traditionally used in gardens and outdoor pavilions where upper class scholars read, wrote, discussed antiques and art and, in general, developed their inner sensibilities.

This drum's small scale makes it an ideal display pedestal or low side table. The stool is subtly etched with thin grooves around the top, suggestive of the lines drawn by stretched hide on an actual drum. Devoid of further decoration, the pale stone drum has a minimalist appeal and looks stunning in modern settings, both indoors and out.
