Studded with brass nails and textured by richly worn black lacquer, this spectacular trunk dates to the late Ming dynasty and would have been used by a wealthy family or merchant to transport money or precious goods. The subdued, neutral exterior belies the brilliant cinnabar red lacquer within, a finish that would have complemented the splendor of the valuable contents the chest once stored. The original brass hardware adds simple decoration, each cloaked in a dark patina from centuries of use. A truly beautiful example of Ming-dynasty design, this grand traveling chest lives on as a storied coffee table or blanket chest.

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
