This three-person bench from China's Shanxi province follows the classic recessed-leg form, defined by legs that are set back from the edge of the top surface and slightly splayed for stability. Popular since the Song dynasty, the recessed-leg design is widely appreciated for its balanced proportions and effortless simplicity.

Dated to the early 20th century, this bench is crafted of northern elm (yumu) using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery methods, without the use of nails or screws. The minimal design is embellished only by the subtle beaded edge trimming the legs and apron and simple spandrels topping each leg. The expansive floating panel top comfortably seats three, making this bench an excellent option for a sitting room or entryway.

Bench has been refinished and has visible repairs to one leg.
