Likely commissioned for his studio, this late 19th-century writing table once gave a scholar ample surface space to draft poetry or practice calligraphy. To cultivate uncluttered and inspiring surroundings, only a few carefully arranged objects would have been placed upon the table, such as a brush pot, inkstone, or table screen. The writing table has a standard mitered frame with a floating panel top and straight round legs. This clean silhouette is contrasted by playful lines drawn in each corner by rounded humpback stretchers and giant's arm braces. Crafted of northern elmwood, the table is darkened by layers of black lacquer for an even finish.
