More portable than heavy chairs, stools have been a favored form of seating in Chinese culture for centuries and were used indoors and out at mealtimes and during social gatherings. This square stool, or fang deng, has a low, rectangular form with geometric lattice aprons and straight legs carved with a decorative ridged texture. Similarly ridged stretchers enclose the apron, designed to resemble strips of bamboo bent around the legs. Darkened by richly aged lacquer, this stool charms with its imaginative play of lines and looks great in modern interiors as a display stand or home accent.
