Designed to be versatile and portable, Japanese tansu chests were multipurpose storage cabinets that moved throughout the home as needed. This gorgeous example is a turn-of-the-century isho tansu (clothes chest), used for storing bedding and out-of-season clothing. Crafted in a traditional style specific to Sendai, the capital city of Miyagi prefecture, the tansu features nine drawers, each decorated with highly worked iron hardware. The widest drawers are adorned with chased iron escutcheons in the form of chrysanthemums and leafy foliage, flanked by large drop handles. The exterior is finished with a coating of red-brown lacquer, adding beautiful color and rich luster to the classic design.

Repaired splits visible on square door on right side. Missing a piece of the iron hardware on the bottom right drawer.
