The lacquer and mica decorations on this cabinet exemplify early 20th-century furniture from Fujian, China. This cabinet was originally part of a suite of furnishings that would have surrounded a platform bed in a woman's private quarters. The fine gilt painting on the doors depicts birds atop flowering branches. The low stand is not original to the cabinet.
