Pair of Spindleback Rose Chairs

This pair of elegant low-back armchairs date to the late Qing dynasty (1644-1911), designed with spindleback frames and clean-lined silhouettes. Known as a rose chair (meiguiyi) or writing chair (wenyi), this type of informal seat was traditionally used in one's personal quarters and evolved from earlier chairs of the Song period (960-1279) crafted from bent bamboo.

The chairs are expertly crafted of fine huali rosewood, a lustrous hardwood appreciated for its rich, warm coloring and dense grain. The back and arm crestrails are supported by vertical spindles and single coin braces decorate the waisted apron. A beautiful example of traditional Chinese furniture, these minimal rose chairs have developed a gorgeous patina with time, burnished smooth along the seat, arms and footrest from centuries of use.
