More portable than heavy chairs, stools have been a favored form of seating in Chinese culture for centuries and were used indoors and out at mealtimes and during social gatherings. This type of square stool is known as a fang deng, and doubles as a low table for displaying objects or serving tea. The stools are crafted in a classical style, featuring square-corner frames, straight legs ending in hoofed feet, and stabilizing humpback stretchers. Expertly constructed of northern elm (yumu) with mortise-and-tenon joinery, the pair combines functionality and spare elegance. The striking silhouettes are enhanced by a black lacquer finish, gently worn from a century of use.
