Demi-lune tables, named for their half moon shape, work especially well as a pair: they are versatile and can flank either side of a doorway or be placed back to back and float in a room. This pair was carved in Northern China of dense and aromatic camphor wood during the Qing Dynasty. It has simple, elegant stretchers and square legs ending in slightly hoofed feet. Each of the tops is truly a wonder—a solid piece cut from a camphor burl with unusual insets. Frequently round tables like this were originally used in the garden pavilions of upper class 19th century Chinese homes.
