Pair of Tapered Two Door Black Lacquer Cabinets

This pair of 19th century cabinets was made in China's Shanxi Province over a century ago. These cabinets beautifully express classical Ming-form furniture prized by modern collectors. Elegantly understated with a strong presence, each has a standard mitered mortise and tenon frame and thoughtfully proportioned brass hardware that creates balance to the austere tapered design. The doors have extended dowels at the top and bottom that ingeniously fit into the upper and lower frames, freeing the cabinet from surface mounted hinges. For thousands of years, traditional Chinese architecture had no interior closets, so cabinets like these were the place to store books, clothing, antiques, food and everything else in a household.
