Hewn from elm and held together with handmade iron nails, this provincial wooden wheel is a remarkable example of turn-of-the-century craftsmanship. Its monumental scale suggests it was used not as a wagon wheel, but as a turning element of a Qing-dynasty mill. The thick outer rim is comprised of nine hand-carved logs, secured in place by iron hardware and eighteen wooden spokes connected to a central wheel shaft. A century of use has enhanced the wood's raw texture and exaggerated the irregular grain patterns. Whether mounted as a sculpture or simply leaning against the wall, this monumental wheel is a true show-stopper.
