The configuration of this late-19th/early-20th century coffer is typical of low cabinets from Tianjin, a port city in Northern China. It has a strong presence, a slight waist, hoof feet and maintains its original hand made brass hardware in the shape of bats, which represent good fortune. The original lacquer finish has developed wonderful character over time. Cabinets like this one provided general storage for a typical home in Tianjin.
