This pair of 19th century red lacquer cabinets from Shanxi, China are unusually configured with drawers above and below the doors. The doors were designed with extended dowels at the top and bottom that ingeniously fit into the frames, freeing the cabinets of the need for distracting surface-mounted hinges. Artisans skilled in the art of traditional Chinese lacquer brushed by hand additional coats over the original finish to achieve a variegated red with colored undertones from the cabinets' past.
