This serene Buddha head was cast of bronze in Thailand in the mid-19th century, and was originally ornately gilt and painted. Cast in the older Sukhothai style, the Buddha bears a flame-like spike stretching upward from the crown of his head. Called an ushnisha, the spike signifies wisdom and the spiritual power of the Buddha's enlightenment. Separated from its seated body, the figure was likely subject to corrosion when ritually deposited within a stupa, a Buddhist reliquary designed as a representation of the universe. With its intricate form and beautifully aged patina, this petite Buddha head is a treasured way to add calm and serenity to a room.
