Popular in northern China, an ice box such as this would have been a summertime staple in the courtyard homes of the Qing-dynasty elite. Lined with pewter, the box was loaded with ice blocks and used like a modern-day air conditioner, a perforated lid allowing for the gradual release of cool air. This fine example is elevated by square display stand and decorated with painted engravings of bamboo, plum blossoms, and tall grasses. A relic of a bygone era, we love this ice box as an unexpected way to chill food and drinks whenever we host events.
